How to feed a hummingbird

Create DIY Nectar: Mix 1 part white granulated sugar with 4 parts water to make homemade nectar. Boil the mixture to dissolve the sugar, then cool it before filling your feeder.

Use a Clean Feeder: Ensure your hummingbird feeder is clean to prevent mold and bacteria. Clean it thoroughly with hot water and a brush every few days, especially in hot weather.

Avoid Red Dye: Hummingbirds are naturally attracted to the color red, so there's no need to add artificial dye to the nectar. Simply use a red-colored feeder to attract them.

Hang Feeders in the Right Spot: Place your feeder in a shaded area, ideally near flowers or trees that can offer shelter, while also ensuring it’s easily visible to the hummingbirds.

Refill Regularly: Hummingbirds have high metabolisms and may visit your feeder multiple times a day. Refill the nectar regularly to ensure a constant food supply.

Offer Fresh Nectar: Change the nectar every few days, especially in hot weather, to prevent fermentation and spoilage, which can harm the birds.

Provide Natural Sources: In addition to nectar, plant native flowers like trumpet vine or bee balm that naturally attract hummingbirds and offer a more varied diet.
